A Message From The Chief

Jarad Phelps - Acting Chief of Police

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Prince William County Police Department. As Acting Chief of Police, I am proud to serve beside the dedicated men and women of this Department, who work together to build positive relationships with community members while providing the highest level of service to keep our citizens safe. For 50 years, this Department established a culture of honesty and integrity as our foundation, and we make every effort to ensure all individuals are treated with equality, compassion and respect.  As a result, the Department has acquired an outstanding reputation of professionalism, and consistently achieves a high community satisfaction rating, which was 94% as of the last biennial community survey.

Policing in the 21st century has dramatically changed and grown in complexity, with continued implementation of technology and the evolution of police policies and practices. Law enforcement is a challenging, rewarding career, and there are many different reasons why our officers have chosen this profession. A common theme among all is the desire to serve as a protector of the community, and truly make a positive difference in others’ lives.

Our success and outstanding reputation is a direct result of the officers who work for this Department, and it starts with hiring the right people. We can teach and train people how to perform the tasks of a police officer, but we cannot teach the indispensable competencies of character. Our hiring process is designed to assess applicants’ qualifications and character traits to ensure they will be the best fit for our agency and community.

The Prince William County Police Department offers many exciting opportunities for diverse, motivated, professional individuals who desire to make a difference in the community. There are a wide range of assignments and opportunities for advancement, including criminal investigations, K-9, forensics, bicycle patrol, and SWAT, and many other specialty units.
